Objectives
Sharks and rays are among the most threatened species worldwide. Whereas, their protection is vital for the marine ecosystems. For this reason, iSea aims, alongsideother direct conservation actions, to hatch in tanks eggs of vulnerable rays bycaught in the area, exploring the potential of their ex situ conservation.
Egg cases of vulnerable ray species are often found entangled in fishing gear. Some of these eggs may still have the potential to hatch under specific conditions, offering a second chance for juveniles to survive and contribute to the recovery of their populations.
Within the “Thermaikos Biodiversity Project” iSea collaborates with local fishing communities to give as many ray eggs as possible from different species a second chance at life, with the aim of gradually recovering their populations, while also raising awareness among the fishing community and the wider public.
