the protection of aquatic ecosystems through raising awareness and informing society about current environmental problems and good practices to address them
The aquatic environment as a precious heritage should be protected and restored in order to preserve biodiversity and ensure its vital functions that contribute to a clean, healthy and productive environment.
Goals
Aquatic Litter
iSea focuses on monitoring the abundance of litter and microplastics, identifying their types and potential sources of origin across the country in collaboration with scientific bodies and other entities. In addition, it informs targeted stakeholder groups and local communities about the impact of aquatic litter, current policies around it, and promotes good practices for marine litter prevention and mitigation, through their awareness raising activities, but also through mobilization and active participation of the local communities
Human and Aquatic Ecosystems
By promoting the understanding of the ocean’s influence on humanity and humanity’s influence on the ocean, the so-called, Ocean Literacy, iSea works with targeted stakeholders with the aim to shape active citizenship and responsible use of the ocean and its resources. In addition, we focus on the study of the interaction between the Greek local communities with the aquatic ecosystems to better understand the social factors related to conservation and management, and contribute to the development of more effective practices
Marine Protected Areas
iSea aims to improve and strengthen the protection within the existing Marine Protected Areas, but also to expand their coverage. To achieve this, we work closely with the local communities, the management units and the local authorities in order to establish strong partnerships and address the challenges linked to the management of MPAs through all stakeholder engagement, the implementation of the existing regulations, the scientific research and the suggestion, improvements and enforcement of Action Plans
Vulnerable Species
iSea aims to increase and disseminate existing knowledge about vulnerable species in order to enhance scientific-based management and ensure their conservation, protection, and restoration to the extent that they fulfill their ecological role in achieving healthy and functional ecosystems. Its actions promote vulnerable species’ conservation and restoration in order to achieve stronger measures and policies for their protection, but also more effective enforcement of the current legislation
